The City of Diamondhead is positioning to take control of our Fire Department and Water and Sewer District through a referendum vote on June 8, 2021.
Make no mistake... Diamondhead residents have enjoyed excellent service from our local Fire and Water and Sewer Districts, and this is a power grab at our expense!
For years, Diamondhead residents have enjoyed excellent service from our local Fire District and Water and Sewer District.
These are critical services to any community, and Diamondhead benefits from dependable and expertise driven utilities.
Why would the city want to take control from the experts who have delivered outstanding service for so many years?
The government always wants more control, and just like we see in Washington and Jackson, the City of Diamondhead is making an aggressive push for GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER.
Unfortunately, many Mississippians live in towns that squander funds intended for water and sewer infrastructure.
The funds are spent on pet projects resulting in communities without the dependable services Diamondhead enjoys.
The City Council “believes” consolidating these utilities into the City Government might achieve savings, based on ONE “financial forecast.”
With no hearings or studies or reports on efficacy or impact, the city is recommending Diamondhead voters trust that our politicians are better prepared to manage these essential services than the experts who have been running them for years and years.
To make matters worse, the city government is playing games with the long-term financial planning for our essential services by opposing funding for our water and sewer infrastructure needs.
Essentially, this is an attempt to disrupt careful financial planning for our functioning Water & Sewer District for the City’s political gain.
Diamondhead deserves better than this. Critical services take years of planning and development by experts, and this power grab is so hasty that it includes no long-term plan or input from experts on these critical services to our community.
Politicians just want voters to trust that they know better than the experts who already successfully provide these services. It’s a bad bet for Diamondhead.
Local governments routinely position their controversial issues as “non-binding” ballot referendums to merely give the appearance of getting public input, when in reality, they trick residents into the false impression that voters demand the city move forward with their agenda.
Too often referendums involve a low turnout, and are decided by a razor thin margin. These results are used by proponents to declare a “mandate” to move forward. Without your informed vote, a referendum can not produce, with integrity, an actionable result.
The City knows that turnout may be low on June 8th, and that is why they rushed to push this through last minute, with no prior discussion. Don't let the POWER GRAB succeed without adding your voice to the issue. Your VOTE is your VOICE!
